Fanurio 3.3.2 Released

July 22, 2021

Version 3.3.2 is now available for download.

This is a free update for all users with an annual maintenance plan that expires after June 1, 2020. Go to the About window to see when your plan expires. If it hasn't expired yet, then you can use this new version. If it has expired and you decide to use it, then you need to renew your plan. If you have any questions about your license, please contact us.

When we started to work on this version, the plan was to fix bugs reported for version 3.3.1. However, soon after that we realized that we must also include several essential improvements to keep up with the latest technology developments. Here are the major improvements for this release.

1. Smaller memory footprint and shorter startup time

If you have recorded lots of data in Fanurio, you may have noticed that it takes longer to start and it needs more memory. This version no longer keeps the entire database in memory so that the application starts faster and uses less memory (about 40% less memory, depending on database size).

2. Full HiDPI support

Because high-density displays also known as HiDPI displays or Retina displays are used by more and more people, HiDPI support has become a minimal requirement for any app. This version finishes the work started in version 3.1.1 when partial support for HiDPI displays was added for the Windows and macOS versions.

The Linux version now works with HiDPI displays and it also has a new interface theme that scales nicely on such displays.

This version replaces all icons with new versions that scale nicely on all platforms (no more unscaled or blurry icons). Below you can see a comparison between the old and the new mini-timer windows on a HiDPI display.

3. Updated user interface

As part of the process of implementing full HiDPI support, a few related improvements were made to the user interface.

1. The toolbar was simplified and all New icons were replaced with a single plus icon.

The Edit Timer action is now represented as a pencil icon in the timer display. Clicking the timer display, will open the Edit Timer window.

The Timers action is now located next to the timer display and it has an itemized list icon.

2. Gradients were replaced with a flat design to match the design of the new icons. The toolbar, the timer display and some of the buttons now have a background with a solid color instead of a gradient color.

3. The setting that specifies how time is entered can now be accessed by clicking the cog icon next to the Time field.

4. Apple Silicon

Last year, Apple announced the availability of new Mac devices based on a new architecture known as Apple Silicon. Starting with this version, Fanurio can run natively on Apple Silicon.

We provide separate installers for Intel-based Macs and Apple Silicon Macs. If you run Fanurio on an Apple Silicon Mac, we recommend installing the native version because it starts faster and it has a smaller memory footprint than the Intel version. Here's how to check which chip your Mac has:

  1. Open the Apple menu.
  2. Select About This Mac.
  3. In the "Overview" tab, look for "Processor" or "Chip".
  4. Check if it says "Intel" or "Apple".

This release also includes fixes for macOS Big Sur, the first operating system to support Apple Silicon.

5. Verified publisher

When you install the new version, Windows will no longer complain that it is from an unknown publisher. Instead, it will display our name (Fanurio Time Tracking SRL) as a verified publisher.

6. Java 11

Fanurio now runs on Java 11. It can still run on Java 8 but we recommend Java 11 because it has new features like full HiDPI support and a smaller memory footprint that provide a better experience.

  • If you use the cross-platform version or the Linux version, make sure you have Java 11 installed to benefit from the latest Java features.

  • If you use the macOS (10.9+) or the Windows version then you don't have to do anything because these versions are bundled with Java 11. The OS X 10.8 version is bundled with Java 8 because it can't use Java 11.

These are the major improvements in this release. For a complete list of all the fixes and improvements, please see the change log.

As always, we'd love to know what you think about the new version. We appreciate all feedback as it helps us build a better and more useful application.

We hope you'll enjoy this new version and that it will help you be more productive.
